Nearly half of US consumers use artificial intelligence, but only 4.5 percent pay for a subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, according to the assessment of Andreessen Horowitz in the seventh edition of their ranking of the most-used consumer artificial intelligence products. Just 4.5 percent of US consumers had an active paid personal subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude in August.

Within that narrow base, revenue is heavily concentrated. According to Andreessen Horowitz, the top one percent of spenders accounts for nearly a fifth of all observed artificial intelligence spending, more than the entire bottom half combined. The top one percent of payers spends about $900 a month on work and creative tools, while the typical user spends around $25.

It reads as a stark reality check for anyone banking on mass-market ad monetization. Massive infrastructure costs completely rule out an ad-driven model, leaving developers with no choice but to squeeze every possible dollar from a tiny, highly motivated B2B segment while the rest of the world enjoys the tech for free.
