San Francisco-based training data provider AfterQuery has closed a funding round at a $3.2 billion valuation, TechCrunch reported citing Forbes. The transaction comes barely five months after the startup closed its $30 million Series A at a $300 million valuation in April. According to Y Combinator partner Gustaf Alströmer, this marks the fastest leap from accelerator debut to multi-billion-dollar unicorn status in YC history.
Emerging from Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch and led by founders in their early twenties, AfterQuery previously claimed a $100 million annualized revenue run rate in April. Mimicking the playbook of Scale AI and Mercor, the outfit employs domain experts—primarily lawyers, clinicians, and specialized professionals—to create high-fidelity datasets. The pitch relies on capturing the reasoning workflows of elite practitioners to train frontier reasoning models and autonomous agents.
While AfterQuery’s enterprise client roster spans Nvidia, Legora, Motif Technologies, and top-tier frontier labs, the tenfold valuation surge exposes intense venture desperation rather than proven business durability. Lacking verified updates on customer retention, gross margins, or recurring revenue quality, investors are effectively writing blank checks on the assumption that specialized human feedback is the ultimate moat in an overheated data market.
