Anthropic, in partnership with HHMI Janelia Research Campus, has launched early access to the Model Hardware Standard—an open driver specification that connects reasoning models directly with physical scientific hardware. The interface translates high-level AI logic into low-level control primitives for liquid handlers, automated microscopes, and robotic arms, solving the long-standing problem of proprietary, incompatible laboratory software.
Architecturally, the agent interfaces with lab instruments via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), standard APIs, or command-line interfaces (CLI), running control scripts without human intervention. Biotechnology company Genentech has already deployed Claude for end-to-end automation of bicinchoninic acid (BCA) protein concentration assays, validating the architecture across a live pipeline.
For pharma and biotech, removing the custom engineering layer between reasoning models and "wet" labs transforms R&D economics. Instead of manually calibrating hardware for every protocol, teams gain 24/7 autonomous experimentation cycles and faster drug development timelines. While frontier models still face physical-world grounding limits and strict biosecurity guardrails, this standard lays the groundwork for next-generation robotic laboratories.
