Google has finally stopped pretending to be a "gateway to the open web" and is aggressively finishing the walls around its information prison. According to a fresh report from Similarweb, the penetration of AI Overviews in search results jumped from 15% to 43% in just one year. This isn't merely an interface update; it is a fundamental dismantling of the old search model. Instead of the familiar list of "blue links" leading to your websites, Google presents users with a synthetic summary of your own content just to keep them from leaving the platform.

Similarweb data confirms that Google is transforming from a navigator into a final destination. Traffic for the "AI mode" grew from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. As users adopt long, conversational queries, the search giant is successfully extending the average session duration. Attention that was once distributed across the web is now preserved within the system. For businesses, this means the AI layer has ceased to be a toy for geeks and has become the primary interface for the customer journey.

Publishers are already beginning to count the losses from this consolidation, watching as referral traffic dries up. Ironically, while citations within AI responses have increased fivefold, these links generate almost no clicks.

Companies like Cloudflare are trying to resist by launching tools to block AI crawlers, but the balance of power is clearly not on the content creators' side. Even the temporary success of ChatGPT in generating click-throughs after its May updates does not change the overall trend: Google has set a course for forced audience retention.

Against this backdrop, the statistics look mocking:

As of May 2026, only 6.8% of desktop queries to ChatGPT in the US contained links to sources. Traditional SEO is degrading under the weight of algorithmic summaries. Business owners are forced to choose between buying ads in Google's "walled garden" or searching for alternative channels.

The situation vividly demonstrates a future where your content will be used for training and answers, but in return, you will receive neither traffic, nor loyalty, nor direct monetization.
