Google is redefining the web experience with a significant update to its Chrome browser. As reported by WIRED, the latest update to Chrome’s desktop “AI mode” radically transforms the search process: the intelligent side panel now stays with the user even after they navigate to third-party websites. Previously, clicking a link typically ended the search session within a specific tab; now, the sidebar remains active as you explore the chosen resource. This shift alters the traditional tab-based workflow, keeping search and analysis tools active within a single window.
To illustrate the utility, Google cites a scenario involving the purchase of a Ninja coffee machine: a user can browse the product page while simultaneously asking the chatbot in the side panel about cleaning instructions or launching a YouTube tutorial in the same space. The update allows the AI to analyze content across multiple open tabs (by selecting them via a “plus” menu) and supports attaching files or images to queries. Notably, a study by SE Ranking suggests that Google.com is the most frequently cited resource within this AI mode, though Google has disputed these findings, categorizing some links as mere navigational aids for refining queries.
For businesses, this innovation means accounting for a persistent contextual window that remains visible to the customer even after they have landed on a company’s site. However, as WIRED notes, testing indicates that AI-generated summaries often fall short of the accuracy and reliability found in the original source material. It is also worth noting that this specific AI side panel operates independently of the “Ask Gemini” tool, which is also integrated into the Chrome ecosystem.
