OpenAI’s latest moves point toward a direct disruption of the traditional app store model as the company rolls out new agentic assistants known as Dots alongside advanced models, according to TechCrunch. The centerpiece of this shift is ChatGPT, which the company states now commands 1.2 billion weekly users. Despite this massive scale, the chatbot has historically underperformed as a discovery mechanism for third-party software. To capture that economic value, ChatGPT will now deliver app suggestions directly within the flow of conversation whenever the system recognizes that a specific tool can assist the user in completing a task.
This distribution mechanic bypasses standard app store loops by integrating software discovery into natural language interactions. As TechCrunch details, the infrastructure relies on an expanded plug-in architecture supporting extensions, which enables developers to construct interactive panels where users operate tools directly inside ChatGPT chats. By moving software execution inside the chat interface, OpenAI transforms applications that once lived on the web or through native desktop and mobile platforms into embedded components of an AI-first ecosystem.
Commercial adoption is further accelerated by ecosystem integration tools designed to lower friction for both users and corporate buyers. TechCrunch reports that “Sign in with ChatGPT” enables users to carry their AI allowance across third-party applications. OpenAI has secured launch partners for this authentication and allowance framework, including Cognition’s Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl. This mechanism binds third-party software usage directly to the user's primary AI subscription tier, altering how software vendors acquire and monetize active seats while leaving traditional gatekeepers out of the transaction entirely.
