OpenAI has now integrated ChatGPT for Healthcare directly into Epic—the dominant market EHR platform holding records for 325 million patients. Instead of manually sifting through PDFs and clinical summaries, medical staff get a conversational interface: doctors can directly query lab marker trends following therapy adjustments or check the date of a patient's last screening.
Integration mechanics
The algorithm aggregates context across diagnoses, clinical notes, prescriptions, lab results, and exam protocols, synthesizing summaries with direct citations to source files in the patient record. The architecture supports two workflows: launching ChatGPT with auto-populated Epic data summaries, or embedding a native conversational side-panel directly into the Epic interface. The initial testing ground is UCSF Health, where clinicians are deploying the tool across complex, multi-year medical histories.
The model is strictly confined to read-only mode: ChatGPT cannot write prescriptions, message patients, modify records, or route orders.
Clinicians only see patients and data they already have permission to access in Epic, and healthcare organizations must run ChatGPT for Healthcare or a HIPAA-enabled Enterprise account.

According to developers, initial testing saw clinicians run 27 clinical scenarios across 4,363 evaluations, rating 99.1% of responses as clinically safe. OpenAI also rolled out a dedicated plugin connecting the model to nine external medical databases, including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, RxNorm, and CMS registries. Clinicians receive a synthesized overview combining individual patient history with evidence-based medical literature without manually uploading heavy research papers.
For OpenAI, this marks a decisive pivot in its B2B strategy: moving beyond selling generic chat interfaces toward embedding directly into the core of proprietary vertical ERP and EHR platforms. Yet in clinical settings, the remaining 0.9% error margin remains critical. The cost of a single hallucination in dosage or drug interaction is catastrophic, leaving legal and clinical liability entirely on the physician.
