OpenAI is implementing strict card and device limits across its paid ChatGPT tiers to curb credential sharing. As OpenAI stated, the company is introducing hardware and payment restrictions as part of its security measures.
New rules target users who link multiple subscriptions to a single payment card or device, blocking them from activating new plans. The platform enforces hard caps on the number of paid accounts tied to a single piece of hardware. When users hit the threshold, the system displays a "Device limit reached" notice, rendering the affected account unusable on that hardware. These restrictions apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 tiers, while free accounts alongside Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans remain exempt.
When users hit the limit, they'll see "Device limit reached," and the affected account can no longer be used on that device.
Logging out no longer frees up a slot. According to official OpenAI support documentation, signing out of an account does not automatically release capacity for another profile. This control architecture hardcodes the association at the hardware level, completely eliminating profile rotation.
The Economics of Forced Upgrades
These restrictions target users who rotated between multiple paid accounts on a single device to maximize usage from fixed-cost subscriptions. Instead of saving via account sharing, users must purchase additional usage credits or resets, which carry a substantially higher financial cost than an extra subscription. These shifts indicate that the company is prioritizing revenue generation over raw user base expansion, a trajectory underscored by the recent merger of its Chat and Work divisions.
For corporate clients and developers, these changes introduce distinct operational risks in managing hardware fleets and shared infrastructure. Strict hardware binding creates friction during staff rotation or hardware failures, pushing businesses toward expensive enterprise tiers to avoid production bottlenecks.
Why it matters
Teams face rising software expenses and device lockouts as OpenAI enforces strict hardware limits to stop colleagues from sharing individual subscriptions. The platform blocks profile rotation across paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro tiers, pushing businesses toward costly enterprise agreements or expensive limit resets. Locking individual accounts to physical hardware turns basic subscriptions into a lever that forces shared workplaces into premium corporate plans.
