The $7 billion price tag marks an aggressive jump from May, when OpenRouter closed a $113 million Series B at a $1.3 billion valuation backed by Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG. Paying a 5x premium inside six months signals that Stripe views multi-model orchestration not as an experimental feature, but as the foundational billing layer of the emerging agentic economy.
Multi-Model Gateways and Traffic Control
OpenRouter operates a dynamic routing layer that directs API calls across more than 400 models for 8 million global users, balancing individual latency constraints against operational budgets.
