Utilities Move Toward Fusion

For decades, fusion power lingered perpetually twenty years away, serving as physics punchline rather than viable baseload generation. That timeline is now colliding head-on with the immediate, ravenous power demands of artificial intelligence clusters. Facing the intermittent realities of solar and wind, utility operators can no longer afford to wait for off-the-shelf commercial reactors; they are forced to underwrite the frontier themselves.

Fusion startup Realta Fusion has signed an agreement with Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) to site a grid-connected fusion power plant in Wisconsin. Crucially, MGE is not just signing a soft letter of intent; the utility is taking an equity stake in Realta while opening up grid interconnection points and direct engineering resources.

The venture targets a 200-megawatt plant scheduled for operation by the mid-2030s, backed by R&D operating out of a repurposed Oscar Mayer plant in Madison. For hyperscalers and data center operators facing long power interconnection queues, this shifts the entire risk model: regional utilities are now absorbing early-stage physics risks to secure carbon-free capacity before computing demands outstrip the regional grid.
