Goldman Sachs has restricted access to advanced AI coding tools like Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub, limiting them exclusively to professional engineers. According to Bloomberg, internal guidelines from October show that the firm has stripped non-technical staff of tools they had spent months using to monitor trading flows and build internal prototypes. This rollback has reportedly caused friction inside the organization as teams adjust to the sudden loss of autonomous prototyping capabilities.
The policy shift dismantles the experimental workflows established earlier this year. In July, Goldman CIO Marco Argenti endorsed "vibe coding" by non-technical personnel, describing asset management staff building quick prototypes with AI before handing them off to engineers for production scaling. However, the operational reality of maintaining code written without formal engineering oversight introduced hidden maintenance overhead and severe compliance vulnerabilities, forcing leadership to reconsider the true cost of unmanaged AI-generated software.
According to Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra, the U-turn reflects calculated adjustments to productivity and risk management. As Nick Carcaterra stated, the experimentation phase is complete, and the firm is restricting the technology to personnel suited to manage its long-term deployment. With non-technical staff cut off from direct code generation, engineering resource allocation has shifted entirely back to supporting core infrastructure and reviewing ad-hoc scripts, effectively ending the brief experiment in democratized software development across trading desks.
The catch
Where does the line fall between employee productivity and uncontrolled operational risk? Goldman Sachs answered by siding with security once the overhead of reviewing and maintaining ad-hoc prototypes from non-technical staff outweighed the speed gained from tools like Claude Code and GitHub. The bank ended the practice just months after publicly endorsing non-technical code generation in July.
