Uber is committing over $10 billion to autonomous mobility, effectively turning its marketplace into the default operating layer for third-party driverless fleets. As outlined in the company's second-quarter 2026 prepared remarks, autonomous vehicle and software partners have committed roughly 120,000 robotaxis to the network. Having abandoned in-house self-driving development in 2020 after offloading its autonomous division to Aurora, Uber is pursuing a capital-light aggregation model. The capital allocation will fund equity stakes, depot infrastructure, and vehicle procurement agreements, with Uber also tapping external co-investors to share asset financing.

The partner roster spans Waymo, Nuro, Lucid, Rivian, Wayve, WeRide, and Zoox.

Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi framed the capital push as an aggregation play during the quarterly update, pointing to $2.8 billion in second-quarter free cash flow—pushing trailing twelve-month free cash flow above $10 billion for the first time. Second-quarter gross bookings grew 24% year-over-year to $58 billion, generating $14.2 billion in revenue. By offloading primary autonomous R&D to dedicated developers while controlling dispatch, fleet integration, charging, insurance, and financing interfaces, Uber is systematically shifting trip unit economics away from driver payouts toward asset orchestration and fleet management fees.

Hybrid Coexistence and Labor Dynamics

Human labor remains the immediate financial backbone of the business. Uber reported that a record 10.2 million active drivers and couriers earned over $25 billion during the second quarter. Driverless trips currently account for less than 0.5% of total platform volume across seven active operational cities, though management expects to reach 15 markets by year-end. Geographic rollout remains tethered to strictly mapped, regulator-approved operating zones.

To manage the transition, Uber has quietly throttled new driver recruitment in several cities where robotaxis already operate. Khosrowshahi claimed the policy aims to protect incumbent driver earnings, but the direction of travel is unmistakable: human drivers are acting as bridge labor, handling edge cases and unmapped corridors until hardware scales and local permissions expand.

Operational Infrastructure and Deployment Realities

Scaling beyond municipal pilot zones requires physical ground infrastructure rather than purely algorithmic readiness. Uber is assembling capabilities covering automated dispatch, depot fast-charging, cleaning, fleet maintenance, insurance underwriting, and remote passenger assistance. While these requirements create secondary roles in depot support and remote teleoperation, Uber has avoided publishing workforce forecasts or disclosing how many traditional driving jobs the 120,000-vehicle fleet will ultimately eliminate.

Uber’s $10 billion commitment signals a clear strategic pivot: capturing the high-margin platform layer while letting partners shoulder vehicle depreciation. While driverless rides remain a tiny fraction of global volume today, the infrastructure Uber is building guarantees that human drivers will increasingly absorb only the marginal, fragmented trips robotaxis cannot yet serve.
